Men's Basketball Takes First Two Conference Games

The men's basketball team defeated Kalamazoo in Calvin this past week to open play in the MIAA. The Scots shot 72-percent in the second half against Kalamazoo behind junior Kyle Woodruff's (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) 22 points on Wednesday (Jan. 2). Then after trailing for most of the game at Calvin on Saturday (Jan. 5), Alma took the lead with 0.3 seconds left with two free throws from junior Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern), who was fouled on a putback attempt. Senior Kevin Gamble (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart) had a double-double in both games while junior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) posted one against the Knights.

Women's Basketball Starts New Year 2-0

The Scots kicked off 2019 with two conference wins as they defeated Kalamazoo College, 65-48, on the road on Wednesday (Jan. 2). Sophomore forward Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) scored a career-high 18 points on nine of 12 shooting. Calvin College then came to Art Smith Arena Saturday (Jan. 5) and Alma came out as the victors by a score of 84-73. The Scots put up 50 on the scoreboard in the first half while freshman guard Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) led the way with a career-high 24 on the six threes. The Scots hold a record of 8-7 overall and 3-3 in MIAA play.

Wrestling Takes First At Waynesburg Invitational

Alma returned to competition after the holiday break and finished in a tie for first place at the Waynesburg University Invitational Saturday (Jan. 5). Juniors Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) won their respective weight classes. Sophomore Mason Priest (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville) took home second place while freshman Jayce Kuehnlein (St. Louis, Mich. / St. Louis) earned third. A total of nine wrestlers won multiple bouts on the day.
