Men's Basketball Splits a Pair
The men's basketball team went 1-1 last week, falling 87-74 at home to Hope and holding off Adrian 74-69 on the road. Alma maintains the sixth seed in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings nearly halfway through the conference season. Although junior guard Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) and sophomore guard Amari Hudson (Highland Park, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy) both scored new career-highs against the Flying Dutchmen, Alma allowed Hope to shoot 52-percent from the field and 47-percent from three. Junior Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) scored a season-high 19 points in the win at Adrian, as the Scots scored 48 second-half points and held on the for the despite a late push from the Bulldogs.
Women's Basketball Drops Game To Conference Leader
The Scots went to No. 10 Trine University (IN) Saturday (Jan. 19) and fell, 77-41, to the nationally-ranked Thunder. Sophomore forward Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio / Arch Bishop Alter) scored a season-high 12 points and grabbed a game-high six rebounds in the loss. Alma still holds onto the final playoff spot in the MIAA with seven games remaining while Trine is in first place with an undefeated conference record.
Scots Fight Till The End Against Olivet, Host Alma Open
Wrestling had a busy week at home with a dual against No. 15 Olivet College on Thursday (Jan. 17) and the Alma Open on Saturday (Jan. 19). The Scots fell to the Comets, 19-18, in a match that could have gone either way in the final moments. Both teams won five matches each but Olivet earned more bonus points. Freshman Jacob Ransom (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West) was looking for a pin in the final bout of the night that would have given Alma the win, but the match ended just before he was about to be awarded it. Seven Scots placed in the Alma Open where no team scores were recorded.
Several Scots Place in Top-Ten in Track and Field
The Alma College track and field team competed at the Doug Hansen Open at Saginaw Valley State University last week and several Scots earned top-ten finishes. The men's 4x400 relay team of junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw Nouvel), sophomore Timothy Minier (Battle Creek, Mich. / St. Philip Catholic Central), freshman Zane Stanton, and senior Jared Fleming (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) took seventh place with a time of 3:37.02. Senior Justin Jones (Rockford, Mich. / Cedar Springs) finished eighth in the men's 3000-meter run, crossing the finish line at 8:55.43, and sophomore Grace Hearth (Freeland, Mich. / Valley Lutheran) and senior Erin Goggins (Hastings, Mich. / Hastings) both took eighth place in the high jump and pole vault, respectively.
Kuczajda Paces Bowling in Sixth Place Finish
The bowling team finished the Kegel/Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association Midwest Collegiate Classic in sixth place out of 61 teams over the weekend. Freshman Rachel Kuczajda bowled over 200 in all five games on Saturday (Jan. 19), while junior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich / Hanover Horton) put up three 200s, including a team-high 235. Junior Josee Hale (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance Senior High), freshman Kemmie Shunk and sophomore Kasidey Easlick (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin) also posted games of 200 or better. The Scots entered Sunday's Baker games in third place and posted an average of 176.2 over 20 Baker games, good for a sixth-place finish.
Swimming and Diving Earns Combined Win Over Olivet
The swimming and diving team earned its first MIAA dual meet in two years on Saturday when it defeated Olivet 228-179. Senior Eric Ferrara (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and junior Sydney Louis-Ferdinand (Southfield, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) each won individual events, while senior Kate Lehman (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) won the 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Jennifer Ostrowski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) added another win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.98. The Scots also took the 200-yard medley relay races.
