Griffin Wins His 900th Game, Softball's Bats Stay Strong

Sitting on 899 wins entering the week, Head Coach Denny Griffin earned his 900th career victory with a 10-6 win over Ohio Wesleyan. Griffin has been the head softball coach at Alma since 1989 (31 years) and has finished with fewer than 23 wins only three times in his career. The softball team averaged nearly 11 runs over four games last week, dropping only a 10-9 decision to Bluffton College on Sunday (March 24) and winning two games by the eight-run mercy rule. Senior McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) and junior Bry Chapman (Holt, Mich. / Holt) both hit home runs for the Scots.

Nycz Becomes Program's All-Time Leading Scorer In Scots' Loss

Senior midfielder Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y. / Iroquois) of the Alma College men's lacrosse team scored in the second quarter of the Scots' 13-8 loss to DePauw University on Saturday (Mar. 24). The goal was Nycz's 120th of his career, making him the program's all-time goals scored record holder. The senior also holds the program record for most assists and most points all-time. Nycz added three assists in the loss while senior goalie Cameron Stelljes (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) surpassed 400 career saves with 16 stops against the Tigers.

Cheer Takes Second in Last Competition Before Nationals

The Alma College cheer team came up just short in the Laker Cheer Classic on Sunday (March 24) afternoon, scoring 84.5 points in the All Girl Advanced division, 4.0 behind Davenport University. This was Alma's final competition before the National Cheerleaders Association National competition in Daytona Beach on April 4.

Baseball Falters Against Nationally-Ranked Adrian

The Scots played four games this weekend against the No. 18 Adrian College Bulldogs. On Saturday (March 23) Alma fell, 8-5, and 10-2. Junior catcher Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich. / Standish-Sterling) led the way in game one by going 3-for-3 with his first home run of the season. On Sunday (March 24) the Scots dropped the doubleheader, 11-4 and 18-0. Alma would outhit Adrian in game one, 11-10, with five different players having two hits each. Sophomore left fielder Nick Hartner (Beaverton, Mich. / Beaverton) would get the only hit of the game for the Scots in game two.

Women's Tennis Sweeps Grace for its Sixth Straight Win

The women's tennis team dropped just 13 games en route to a 9-0 sweep of Grace College (IN) on Thursday. Two Scots earned 6-0 wins in singles competition, while seven singles games were decided by a 6-1 finish. Sophomore Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) led the way with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mikyala Reynolds, then teamed up with freshman Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove South) to defeat Reynolds and Ashleigh Welty 8-0 in doubles play.

Men's Tennis Earns Sweep of Grace

The Alma College men's tennis team earned its second straight sweep with a 9-0 victory over Grace College on Thursday (March 21) afternoon. Junior Brett Reuter (Armada, Mich. / Armada) earned the win in singles competition by the smallest of margins, beating Nick Pilieci 7-5, 7-5. Freshman Brendan Murdie (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) had the biggest win of the day, 6-2, 6-0 over Hank Schemmel. Murdie also teamed up with junior David Suidgeest (St. Johns, Mich. / St. Johns) to sweep Schemmel and Kaleb Underwood 8-0.

Track and Field Begins Its Outdoor Season

The Scots traveled to Indiana Wesleyan University to take part in the Polar Bear Invitational on Saturday (March 23). Junior Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) the men's 110-meter hurdles event in 15.90 seconds, good for second place while senior Kyle Kraus (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple-Kellogg) set a new personal record with his 41.85-meter throw. Junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich. / Saginaw Nouvel) also set a new personal-best time in the men's 800-meter run. For the women, freshman Bailey Hoffman (Olivet, Mich. / Olivet) competed in the finals of the women's hammer throw event, taking ninth place with a 39.93-meter throw.
