Men's Lacrosse Punches Playoff Ticket On Senior Day
The Scots took down Trine 10-8 on Saturday at Bahlke Field to earn the three seed in this week's MIAA postseason tournament. Junior attacker Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) scored a hat trick including the game-winner with just under six minutes remaining on a perfect feed in front of the net from senior midfielder Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y. / Iroquois). Freshman attacker Timothy Gearig (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) also scored a hat trick in the game as the program honored its senior class of Nycz, defenders Max Linscott (Columbus, Ohio / New Albany) and Adam Cousineau (Canton, Mich. / Salem), goalie Cameron Stelljes (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) and midfielder Gabriel Vargas (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / Charles W Flanagan).
Baseball Sweeps Hope, Takes Two From Kalamazoo
Alma started its week against Hope on Monday, a team that had the best winning percentage in all of Division III baseball and a 16-game winning streak heading into the games. The Scots swept the doubleheader by scores of 9-7 and 11-9. Sophomore Carson Kempa (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) and junior Aaron Saenz (Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville-Sebewaing Area) picked up the wins on the mound of the Scots while at the plate sophomore Alex Dwan (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) hit his first career home run with a three-run blast. Alma then took on Kalamazoo for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. The Scots earned a win on each day with Saenz picking up his fourth straight victory on Saturday and junior shortstop Zach Schirmer (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) hitting a three-RBI double to help the Scots take one at home on Sunday.
Softball Goes Out with a Bang
The Scots ended their season going 5-1 in their final week. Senior McKenzie Creed (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg) hit her tenth home run of the year against Olivet, tying her for the most in a single season in Alma history and giving her 19 in her career, the second-most of any Alma player. Freshman Hadyn Terwilliger (Mount Pleasant, Mich. / Sacred Heart Academy) hit three home runs in game two versus the Comets, the first time that feat has ever been accomplished in by a Scot. As a team, Alma had the highest batting average (.357) and slugging percentage (.537) and the second-highest on-base percentage (.421) of any team in program history. Alma also hit 79 doubles, more than any other year. 27 home runs, third on the program's all-time list.
Women's Lacrosse Ends Year with Win and Broken Records
Alma ended its year with an 18-2 win over Olivet on Saturday (April 27). Goalie Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) ends her junior year as the Division I, II and III leader in saves per game with 15.71 and is tied for third across all divisions with 220 saves. Junior Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) posted 48 goals and 56 points, eighth and ninth on the program's single-season record list, respectively. She also earned 55 draw controls, the third-most in one year in Alma's history.
Men's Track and Field Places Fourth at Davenport Tune-Up
The track and field team took part in the Davenport University Tune-Up on Saturday (April 27), with the men placing fourth and the women 10th out of 14 teams. Sophomore Timothy Minier (Battle Creek, Mich. / St. Philip Catholic Central) posted his own and the team's best time in the 200-meter dash at 22.62, finishing second. Senior Jared Fleming (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) did the same in the 400. Junior Aubrey Hemstreet (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) won the women's 5000 with a personal best 18:43.52. Senior Kyle Kraus (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple-Kellogg) second in the javelin with a best of 43.66 meters, a new personal record. He also placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.80 meters.
Women's Tennis Comes Up Short
The women's tennis team also fell 9-0 in its last two matches of the season. Freshman Emily McDonald (Wheeler, Mich. / Bullock Creek High School) had arguably the best outing against Lily Brandt of Saint Mary's, falling 6-1, 6-3. Junior Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) also performed will against Lilly Chamberlin, falling 6-2, 6-2.
Men's Tennis Drops Two in Final Week
Alma dropped its final two matches of the regular season last week. Sophomore Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) battled hard against Hope's Tim Roe but came up short, 6-3, 6-1 in what would be a 9-0 loss for the Scots. Against Kalamazoo, junior Brett Reuter (Armada, Mich. / Armada) fell to Daniel Henry 6-3 in the first set, then was swept 6-0 in the second.
