Volleyball Starts Off 4-0
The volleyball team went four for four at the Elmhurst College Tournament to open the year, sweeping one match and taking the other three in four sets. Sophomore Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) is averaging 4.80 kills per set, the best average in the MIAA. Junior Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) is second in assists with 144.
Freshman Yates Finishes First at Labor Day Classic
Morgan Yates (Shepherd, Mich. / Shepherd High School) won the Labor Day Classic Individual Championship at the Medalist Golf Club over the weekend. Yates posted a score of 157 (+13) over two rounds in her first collegiate tournament. The Scots placed second overall with 686 total strokes (+110), defeating Aquinas, Allegheny and Adrian.
Offense Kicking for Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team had two strong showings last week, coming up just short in a 3-2 overtime loss to Coe on Friday (Aug. 30) and defeating Hiram handily 2-0 on Sunday (Sept. 1). Newcomers are dominating the stat sheet early on as all three goal scorers joined the team this year. Freshman Lily Stephan (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt High School) has a goal in each game while freshman Kayleigh Reilly (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant High School) and sophomore Lexi Russell (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston High School) each have one apiece.
Men's Soccer Goes 1-1 in Two Tight Matches
Both of Alma's games went down to the wire in the opening week. The men's soccer team lost 3-2 to Aurora in the closing minutes on Friday (Aug. 31) but turned around and beat Benedictine 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday (Aug. 31). Senior Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) tallied three points against Benedictine including the game-winning goal in double overtime. Sophomore Danten McFate (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) had a goal in each game, the first two of his career.
Freshman Curran Shoots Under Par in Second Round of Lou Collins Invitational
Andrew Curran (Byron Center, Mich. / Jenison High School) shot a 71 (-1) on Saturday (Aug. 31) to lead the men's golf team at the Lou Collins Invitational. He finished ninth overall with a 147 (+3) over both days. Junior Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich. / Big Rapids) shot 160 (+16) while sophomore Eli Pinter (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) went for a 166 (+22). The Scots finished 12th overall.
Cross Country Places Third in Season-Opening Meet
Both the men and women cross country teams finished in third place at the CMU Jeff Drenth Invitational on Friday (Aug. 30). Senior Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central High School) notched a new personal best at 19:09.70, while fellow senior Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) posted Alma's fastest time on the men's side, coming in at 16:12.74.
