Football Stalled Against Baldwin Wallace

The Scots dropped their 2019 opener 31-14 to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday (Sept. 7) as they were undone by three turnovers. Junior quarterback Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) tossed one touchdown to tight end Joseph Schaefer (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) and senior Max Kretzschmar (Marine City, Mich. / Marine City) returned a blocked field goal for a 90-yard touchdown. Alma outrushed the Yellow Jackets behind a balanced attack including sophomore Brendan Hamilton (Cass City, Mich. / Cass City), senior Austin Spratling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Wyoming Kelloggsville) and Stevens. Baldwin Wallace scored 14 points off Alma's giveaways.

Women's Soccer Rolls Heidelberg, Nearly Completes Comeback Against MSJ

The women's soccer team went 1-1 last week, beating Heidelberg 2-0 on Friday (Sept. 6) and falling in a tough 3-2 overtime decision to Mount St. Joseph Sunday (Sept. 8). Alma trailed 2-0 in the 77th minute to MSJ when sophomore Lexi Russell (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston High School) scored from 25 yards out. She did the same five minutes later to tie the game at two before she and the Scots eventually fell in overtime. Freshman Paige Moore (St. Johns, Mich. / St. Johns High School) and junior Tori Aquilino (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton) both scored against Heidelberg while junior goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) posted a total of 11 saves.

Canlas Leads Men's Soccer to Comeback Win Over Knox

Senior Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) singlehandedly erased a 2-0 deficit in a 3-2 win over Knox College on Saturday (Sept. 7). The goals were Canlas's second and third of the year, giving him the lead on the team. The Scots dropped matches to Carthage and Wisconsin-Whitewater last week. Seven different players were given yellow cards over Alma's three games.

Women's Tennis Dominant in First Two Matches

Alma won both its matches big, 8-1 over Manchester and 9-0 over Olivet last week. Senior Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) and freshman Amanda Szymborski won both their matches 6-0, 6-0. Junior Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich / Portland) had Alma's only loss, 7-6, 6-2 to Manchester's number one singles player.

Volleyball Wins One in MIAA/NCAC Crossover

Volleyball went 1-2 in the MIAA/NCAC Crossover over the weekend, defeating Denison University (OH) and falling to Hiram College (OH) and Ohio Wesleyan University. Sophomore Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) had a career-high 26 kills in the win over the Big Red and hit a combined .289 over the three matches. Junior Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) had 45 assists against Denison, one off her season-best.

Men's Cross Country Finishes 18th, Women 20th at the Calvin Knight Invitational

The cross country men finished 18th while the women finished 20th as they both competed against 24 teams at the Calvin Knight Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 7). Leading the Scots were senior Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) and senior Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central High School). Hemstreet finished the women's 6K placing 61st overall with a time of 23:34.2. Reed placed 93rd overall in the men's 8K with a time of 27:04.80.

Men's Tennis Survives Two Tight Matches

Men's tennis won both its matches 5-4 last week, including a thrilling come-from-behind win against Olivet. Senior David Suidgeest (St. Johns, Mich. / St. Johns) clinched the deciding games in both matches, including a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over the Comets. In the fifth singles match, junior Tait Morrissey (Big Rapids, Mich. / Big Rapids) tied it up at four with a 6-0, 6-2 victory to allow Suidgeest to win it. Suidgeest and junior Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) are Alma's two remaining undefeated players after two matches.
