Football Falls to Hope

Alma dropped a 31-24 decision to MIAA-leading Hope College on Saturday (Nov. 2). Alma switched its offense against the Flying Dutchmen, relying more on the passing game than in any other game this season. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) completed 19 of 35 passes for 315 yards, all of which are new career highs. Nathan Goralski (Romeo, Mich. / Romeo High School) also had a career day, catching nine passes for 181 yards and one touchdown, a 69-yard shot from Stevens.

Hemstreet Earns Second Team All-MIAA at Conference Championships

The Alma College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the MIAA Championship Saturday (Nov. 2); the women placed sixth and the men placed fifth. Senior Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central High School) was selected to the Women's Cross Country All-MIAA Second Team. Freshman Cornelia Gotaas (Alma, Mich. / Alma) followed Hemstreet with a time of 36:59.3 and placing 32nd. Senior Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich. / Benzie Central) led the men with a time of 27:34.2. Fellow senior Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich. / Oscoda Area) closely followed Reed with a time of 27.34.9 and placed 18th overall.

Volleyball Falls to No. 4 Calvin, Earns Spot in MIAA Tournament

The volleyball team fell to No. 4 Calvin University last week, but that didn't prevent the Scots from earning a spot in the MIAA Tournament. Alma is the fourth seed in the conference and will host Albion in the first round. Against the Knights, sophomore Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) led Alma with nine kills and eight digs. Junior Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) led in the assists category with 22; she also had six digs. Sophomore Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) and freshman Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin High School) had five kills, each.

Women's Soccer Knocked Out of MIAA Postseason

The women's soccer team was eliminated from the MIAA Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Albion on Saturday (Nov. 2). Ashley Oldham (Gilbert, Ariz. / Chandler Basha) scored off a free kick from Lily Stephan (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt High School) to give the Scots a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Britons would score two goals in three minutes to get the win. Earlier in the week, Stephan, Makenzie Rajewski (Midland, Mich. / Midland), Lexi Russell (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston High School) and Dakota Booher were all named to the All-Conference team; Stephan and Rajewski earned a spot on the First Team and Russell and Booher found themselves on the Second Team.

Men's Soccer Drops Season Finale

Alma fell in its season finale on Wednesday (Oct. 30), 3-0 to Trine University. Brian Ganton (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) had a team-high six shots for the Scots (5-11, 2-5), two of which were on goal. Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) made nine saves in the game for the fourth time this season. The Scots finish the season 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA.

Women's Bowling Wins AC Open

The bowling team finished first at the AC Open on Saturday (Nov. 2). It is the second tournament the Scots have won this year, the first being the American Heartland I.
