Alma Ends Season with Dismantling of Finlandia
The football team wrapped up the season with a 46-0 victory over Finlandia University on Saturday (Nov. 16) on Senior Day. Alma scored on its first three offensive drives while earning a safety, a fumble recovery, and a 10-minute drive the ended in a turnover on downs on its first three defensive possessions. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) finished 8-of-11 for 77 yards and two touchdowns on three drives. Mason Ippel (Jenison, Mich. / Jenison) ran for 65 yards on six carries and one touchdown. Joseph Schaefer (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) caught four passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns while Dontae Burks (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall Senior High School) led the ground game with 67 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown run, on just five carries.
Men's Basketball Stopped in First Two Contests
The Scots fell to No. 17 Augustana and Illinois Wesleyan to start the season. Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) led in scoring in each game, averaging nearly 18 points. Five players scored in double figures against the Titans: Kleiver Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly), Brandon Rake (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall), Zach Sinke (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) and Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern).
Women's Bowling Makes History at BGSU Falcon Classic
The bowling team won in the BGSU Falcon Classic on Saturday (Nov. 16) while the JV team also won its tournament – both happened at the same meet for the first time in program history. The Scots were led by sophomore Rachel Kuczajda, who averaged 216 over five games, followed by three other Scots placing in the top 70. Senior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich. / Hanover Horton) followed Kuczajda in sixth place with a total of 980 points and tournament average of 196 and Senior Josee Hale (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance Senior High) came in 21st with an average of 177.2 points per game.
Wrestling Goes 2-2 at Adrian College Duals
The wrestling team defeated Penn State Behrend, 55-0, and Milwaukee School of Engineering, 48-3, while falling to Central College, 21-20, and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 24-19, at the Adrian College Duals on Saturday (Nov. 16). Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) both went 4-0 on the day. Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood), Matt Tomsett (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere), and Austin Fox (Fort Worth, Texas / Timber Creek) each earned wins against Central. Zachariah Kelley (Freeport, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg) and Dylan Seaton (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) got in the win column against Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Cross Country Ends Season at Great Lakes Regional
The cross country teams competed at the Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship on Saturday (Nov. 16) where the men finished 21st for the second straight year and the women finished 25th, three spots better than 2018. Senior Aubrey Hemstreet (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central High School) finished 66th overall among 233 women in the 6K, coming in at 23:02.9 (3:50/K). Senior Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich. / Oscoda Area) led the men with a time of 25:29.3 (3:11/K) and placing 62nd.
Women's Basketball Cooled Down after Hot Start
The women's basketball team went 1-2 in action this past week with a win over Wisconsin Lutheran and losses to Bluffton and No. 14 Wheaton. Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) had a stellar start to the week as she had a 25-point game against Wisconsin Lutheran and averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds, one assist, two steals and three blocks over Alma's first two games. Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo-Westphalia) was named to the Wheaton Tip-Off All-Tournament Team after playing all 40 minutes in each of Alma's two games and averaging 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.
