Alma Knocks Off No. 13 UW-Oshkosh, Falls to UW-Whitewater
Alma, Mich. - The Alma College men's basketball team upended No. 13 Wisconsin-Oshkosh 88-81 on Friday (Dec. 6) evening. It is Alma's first home win against a ranked opponent since the 2015-16 season when it defeated No. 4 Hope College. The Scots (4-2) trailed by as many as nine in the game. They were down by six midway through the second half before Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) hit a three to cut the lead in half. Four possessions later, Alma went on an 11-2 run to go up 76-72 with 4:39 left. A layup would bring UW-Oshkosh to within two, but Alma didn't allow the Titans to get any closer. Trailing by three to Whitewater, the Scots had two chances to tie the game in the last thirty seconds but could not convert. The Warhawks then hit the front end of a one and one with 2.1 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Women's Basketball Falls in Two Tight Contests
Alma lost 55-51 to Saint Mary's and 65-62 to Albion to open conference play. Trailing by 12 with 4:23 remaining against Saint Mary's, the Scots went on an 11-0 run to get to within one with less than two minutes left. After the Belles hit a free throw to go up by two with 21 seconds left, Jeny Brandt's (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) attempt to tie the game sat on the rim before trickling off. Alma trailed Albion by ten midway through the fourth quarter before Scots cut the deficit to two with 2:34 left when Brandt converted a layup. Albion was able to push the lead back up to six and Alma again cut it in half with a three from Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) with 36 seconds left. The Scots forced a miss on the defensive end but couldn't convert the game-tying three-pointer as time expired.
Scots finish fifth at Ohio Northern Invitational
The Alma College wrestling team placed fifth at the Ohio Northern Invitational. Five Scots placed in their respective weight classes. Trent Lashuay (Saint Johns, Mich. / Saint Johns) won the 133 weight class while Austin Wieczorek (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood) and Jacob Ransom (Traverse City, Mich. / Traverse City West) finished third in the 125 and heavyweight, respectively. Carter Hankins (Hartland, Mich. / Hartland) finished fourth in the 141 weight class and Jayce Kuehlein (St. Louis, Mich. / St. Louis) placed sixth. Lashuay scored the most points in a match at the invitational, with 23, and the most total match points, with 73. Wieczorek and Lashuay both won by technical fall twice. Hankins pinned his opponent three times.
Track and Field Opens Season at SVSU
The Alma College track and field teams traveled to Saginaw Valley State University on Friday (Dec. 6). The meet served as the indoor season opener for the Scots. The meet consisted of mostly NAIA and NCAA Division II schools. Junior Stephanie Davis (Elmira, Mich. / Gaylord) became the first female athlete in program history to compete in the indoor pentathlon. The indoor pentathlon consists of five track and field events, the shotput, high jump, long jump, 60-meter hurdles, and 800-meter run. Overall Davis finished in 10th place with 2442 points out of 12 athletes. Other Scots competing were juniors Grace Hearth (Freeland, Mich. / Valley Lutheran) and Audrey Padilla (Manistee, Mich. / Manistee). Hearth finished in 21st place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.46 seconds, while Padilla earned a 12th place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.93. Senior Luke Reed (Benzonia, Mich / Benzie Central) finished in fourth place in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:13.81.
Swimming and Diving Takes Part in Carthage Classic
Kenosha, Wis. - The Alma College swim and dive teams completed the final day at the Carthage Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 7). The men's team took seventh with a total of 798 points, and the women's team took sixth with 1,056. The men started off strong with a sixth-place finish by senior Cole Malhoit (Canton, Mich. / Canton), freshman Cameron Heintzelman (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix), freshman Josh Mushinski (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill), and freshman Nate Sutton (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) in the 800 Yard Free Relay with a time of 7:43.57. Sutton continued to lead the men with a fifth-place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle (16:42.50) and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.09). The women were led by junior Allison Brown (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) and sophomore Jennifer Ostrowski (Northville, Mich. / Northville). Brown took first in the 100-yard back with a time of 1:00.42. Ostrowski then placed third in the 100-yard breast with a time of 1:10.91. Brown, Ostrowski, freshman Emily Diener, and sophomore Sarah Gaines (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Liberty) also took seventh in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:13.10.
