Men's Basketball Beats Hope In Holland for First Time Since 1993-94

The Scots outlasted Hope College 91-86 on Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon. It is the first win over the Flying Dutchmen in Holland since the 1993-94 season and Alma's first ever win over Hope at the DeVos Fieldhouse. Senior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) and sophomore Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) combined to score the Scots' last 11 points of the game. With Alma up three, Kleiver dribbled through the defense and created space for himself with a midrange stepback jumper that he nailed with 12 seconds left to seal the win. He finished with 16 points and six assists.

Bowling Posts Two Top-Three Finishes

The Alma College women's bowling team finished third in the American Heartland III tournament on Saturday (Jan. 25) and fourth in the American Heartland IV on Sunday (Jan. 26). The Scots were led by senior Emma Davis (Horton, Mich. / Hanover Horton) on Saturday, who finished in sixth place with an average of 191.2 points per game and a total of 956 over five games. Sophomore Kemmie Shunk placed second on Sunday with an average of 201.5 points per game and game total of 806 points.

Women's Basketball Takes Down Adrian

Alma dropped Adrian 67-56 on Saturday (Jan. 25) evening in an even offensive performance. Sophomore Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) scored a team-high 11 points while junior Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba), freshman Jackie Jarvis (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville) and junior Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich. / Battle Creek Lakeview) each added 10.

Track and Field Continue to Set PRs

Freshman Cornelia Gotaas (Alma, Mich. / Alma) finished 800-meter run in 2:31.84 and junior Audrey Padilla (Manistee, Mich. / Manistee) finished the 400-meter run in 1:02.04 for Alma at SVSU's Jet's Pizza Invitational. Both set new PRs and places them in the top 10 for both events in Alma's indoor track and field history. Senior Aubrey Hemstreet (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) completed the one mile run with a time of 5:43.14, placing her 23rd out of 47 competitors. Senior Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich / Lumen Christi) competed in the 60-meter hurdles finals, placing sixth with a time of 8.67.

Wrestling Falls to Olivet

The wrestling team came up short 24-13 against Olivet on Thursday (Jan. 23) evening. Senior Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) had a terrific match against Drew Mandell that went the distance; Cooper came out on top 22-17. Senior Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) also earned a win, 6-2, with a riding time of over six minutes.

Swimming and Diving Faces Hope

The swimming and diving team fell to Hope College in an MIAA dual meet on Saturday (Jan. 25) 308.5-204.5, though the women lost by only 31 points. Sophomore Jennifer Ostrowski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) won both the 50 yard breaststroke and 200 yard breaststroke with times of 32.80 and 2:35.00. Freshman Nate Sutton (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) claimed victories in both the 500 yard and 1000 yard freestyle with times of 4:58.56 and 10:10.65. In the latter race, Sutton edged his Hope opponent by three one-hundredths of a second.
