Stevens Shines for Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team is riding a three-game winning streak after taking down Kalamazoo 86-78 on Wednesday (Jan. 29) and Adrian 83-72 on Saturday (Feb. 1). Senior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) registered his 500th career assist against the Hornets, becoming the first player in Alma College history to post 1,000 points and 500 assists in his career. He followed that up with a near triple-double against the Bulldogs with 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Ladd Named MIAA's Most Valuable Wrestler

Senior Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) was selected as the Most Valuable Wrestler of the MIAA as he currently holds a 14-1 record on the year. The two-time All-American also repeats as the best wrestler in the 141 weight class. Sophomore Lucas Brewer (Belleville, Mich. / Huron) was selected to the All-MIAA team in the 174 weight class. The second-year wrestler went undefeated in conference duals. Sophomore Trent Lashuay (Saint Johns, Mich. / Saint Johns) competed in the Wheaton Invitational unseeded and placed fourth out of 28 wrestlers in the 133 weight class.

Women's Basketball Blows Out Olivet, Falls to Calvin

The women's basketball team crushed Olivet 76-39 on Wednesday (Jan. 29) evening in a wire-to-wire win, then fell to Calvin 65-48 on Saturday (Feb. 1). Alma led the Comets by as much as 40 as held Olivet to under 25 percent shooting from the field. Juniors Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) and Emily Eldridge (Battle Creek, Mich. / Battle Creek Lakeview) both led the Scots with 12 points apiece. Sophomore Oretha Humphries (Detroit, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public) had a team-high 16 points against Calvin, making all six of her free throws.

STUNT Splits Opening Day of Games

The STUNT team split its season-opening games, comfortably defeating Grand Valley 18-9 and falling in a close match to Davenport 17-9. Alma was comfortable throughout its match with the Lakers. The Scots led 4-2 after the first quarter, earning points in partner stunt routines seven, one, five and six. Alma allowed a point to GVSU in pyramids routine one but took the points in routines three, four and five. It led 7-3 at halftime. Alma continued to extend its lead in the third quarter, earning points in jump & tumble routines two, three and five. Grand Valley split the points in routine five and took routine four. The Scots secured the win in the fourth with eight points over routines two, one and four. Alma hung tough with the Panthers through three quarters but were outdone in the final frame.

Track and Field Takes Third at the Aquinas Little Meet

The track and field team competed at Aquinas on Friday (Jan. 31) finishing in third place out of six teams on the day. Senior Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich / Oscoda Area) led the Scots with a first-place finish in the 3000 meter run and ending with a time of 9:19.00. Stephanie Davis (Elmira, Mich. / Gaylord) set a new program record in the women's 600 meter run with a time of 1:51.85. Junior Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich / Lumen Christi) competed in the 60 meter hurdles finishing with a time of 8.61 and third in the initial race. Wildenhaus finished in second in the finals with the same time.

Swimming and Diving faces Albion and Calvin in MIAA Tri-Meet

The swimming and diving teams dropped a pair of meets to Calvin University Albion College on Saturday (Feb. 1). On the men's side, the Scots fell to the Knights 225-45 as well as the Britons 220-43. The women were also defeated by the hosts 222-50 and Britons 232-42. Freshmen Sarah Wronski (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) finished in seventh place in both the 100 yard and 200-yard backstrokes with times of 1:05.74 and 2:24.71. Junior Max Carey (Highland, Mich. / International Academy West) and freshman Sawyer Hill (Wyandotte, Mich. / Wyandotte Roosevelt) finished seventh and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly event.


The eSports team dropped its opened two games in the League of Legends season to Hawaii Pacific and Georgia Southwestern.
