Stevens Shines in Alma's 96-88 Win Over Olivet

The men's basketball team defeated Olivet College 96-88 on Wednesday (Feb. 12) evening in an emotional matchup. Sam Hargraves, Olivet's head coach, coached at Alma from 2011-19. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) scored a career-high 27 points to go along with 10 assists. Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) had 21 points off the bench, including five three-pointers. Jack Poling (Portland, Ore. / Westview) scored 15 points and Brandon Rake (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall) grabbed 10 rebounds. The game was tightly contested all the way through, much like the previous matchup. Alma led for the majority of the game and pulled away in the final few minutes. Its biggest lead in the game was 13, which it got with two minutes left. Alma fell to Calvin later in the week.

STUNT Hosts Tournament, Wins Two Games

The STUNT team defeated Ferris State University 21-0 and Michigan State University 14-10 on Sunday (Feb. 16). Alma beat MSU by scoring two points in the second round of the fourth quarter, making its lead insurmountable. The Scots had no trouble against the Bulldogs in its first game of the day; Alma earned all 21 points, doing so in every one of the first four routines.

Women's Bowling Takes Fourth at Hoosier Classic

The women's bowling team finished in fourth place at the 51st annual Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis over the weekend. Rachel Kuczajda was Alma's high scorer with 218.8 over six games. "The Hoosier is the biggest tournament of the regular season," said Head Coach Kyle Woodcock. "Taking fourth place out of 64 teams might be the best accomplishment in the history of our bowling program."

Men's Lacrosse Falls to Carthage in Home Opener

The men's lacrosse team fell to Carthage College 14-13 on Saturday (Feb. 15) in its home opener at Bahlke Field. Down 14-10 midway through the fourth quarter, the Scots got goals from Timothy Gearig (Vicksburg, Mich. / Vicksburg) and Tom Needham (Saline, Mich. / Saline). With 48 seconds remaining, senior Connor Alley (Powell, Ohio / Worthington Kilbourne) scored to pull the Scots within one goal of tying the game at 14, but the Scots were unable to find the net again. Alley was one of the Scots leaders on offense with three goals. Gearig and senior Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio / University School) also had three goals for the Scots.

Women's Lacrosse Falls to Cleary

The women's lacrosse team fell to Cleary University on Thursday (Feb. 13) afternoon in the team's season-opening game. Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) led the Scots in goals (two), ground balls (five) and draw controls (four). Alyssa Gall (Richmond, Mich. / Richmond) and Johnna Pullen (Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia) also each registered goals. Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) made 16 saves in 55 minutes of action. Freshman Madie Acosta (Fruita, Colo. / Fruita Monument) made an appearance in the final few minutes of her first collegiate game. 

Nine Scots Place at Mid-States Invitational

The wrestling team competed at the Mid-States Invitational Saturday (Feb. 15). Nine Scots placed and Zachary Cooper (Chippewa Hills, Mich. / Whitehall) won the 149 weight class. Chase Beecher (Clio, Mich. / Clio), Zachariah Kelley (Freeport, Mich. / Thornapple Kellogg), and Nicholas Dawson (Gladstone, Mich. / Gladstone Area) all placed in the 125 weight class. Beecher placed second. After a first round bye, he went on to win two matches by decision to advance to the championship. Kelley also had a first round bye and won his first match of the day by pinfall in 4:00. He wrestled his way to the third place match that he won by decision 8-5. Dawson lost his first match of the day but responded with a win by pinfall in 3:18. He would finish the tournament in fifth place.

Women's Basketball Falls to No. 2 Hope

The women's basketball team fell to No. 2 Hope College on Saturday (Feb. 15) afternoon. The program celebrated the accomplishments and dedication on its four-member senior class – Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich. / Pewamo-Westphalia), Hannah Syme (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern/Calvin College), Jessie Jordan (Mason, Mich. / Williamston) and Madison Hill (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) – prior to the game. Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) led the Scots with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench. Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) had nine points and 11 rebounds. Thelen had eight points, three rebounds and three assists. Oretha Humphries (Detroit, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public) added six points and four rebounds.

Track and Field Competes Against WHAC

The track and field team competed at the WHAC vs. MIAA Challenge on Friday (Feb. 14). Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) won the women's shot put with a distance of 12.23 meters. Sophie Patrick threw for a distance of 11.45 meters, good for sixth place. Hengesbach also finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 13.47 meters. Stephanie Davis (Elmira, Mich. / Gaylord) won the women's 600-meter dash with a time of 1:50.60. Madeline McDonnell (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) finished fifth in 2:15.44. Jacob Wildenhaus (Jackson, Mich / Lumen Christi) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58. Vernonell Smith finished fifth in 9.15 seconds.
