Alma, Mich. - Three student-athletes from the Alma College baseball team have been recognized by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association for their play during the 2018 season, it was announced today (Tuesday, May 8) as the league announced the 2018 All-MIAA Baseball Teams.
Senior pitcher Eric Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./Montini Catholic), sophomore third baseman Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) and senior outfielder Matt Minaudo (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) all received All-MIAA Second Team accolades for the Scots, who finished third in the regular-season standings, posting the second-most league wins in program history.
Frontzak was a perfect 5-0 in conference play, posting an ERA of 1.99 against MIAA opponents in seven appearances. Overall, he owns a record of 7-1 with a team-best 2.25 ERA in 11 outings. Frontzak, who has been in the Scots' starting rotation for the past two seasons, is tied for fourth in program history with 16 career victories while recording 102 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.81 in 36 career appearances. He is also one of 10 players in program history to notch seven or more wins in a single season.
Huff has started all but one game this season and owns a team-best .347 batting average along with a team-high 50 hits, becoming one of seven players in program history to tally 50 or hits in a single season. Against conference opponents, Huff hit .346. In the field, Huff sported an .855 fielding percentage.
Minaudo totaled a career-high 37 RBIs in the regular-season to rank second among MIAA players and tie the program's single-season record. He also hit a career-high .320 with five home runs while starting all 40 games. In conference action, Minaudo posted a .368 batting average and recorded a fielding percentage of .986, including 67 putouts. Minaudo currently has 147 at-bats this year, third all-time and eight shy of his school record 155 in 2016. He has also played in 146 career games and is tied for third in that category with Matt Cresswell (2010-13). In addition, Minaudo ranks third in career hits with 140, and third in career RBIs with 84.
The Scots (23-17 overall, 16-12 MIAA) have qualified for the MIAA Baseball Tournament for the second time in three seasons and will host Hope College on Wednesday, May 9, in a first-round game. The Scots are the No. 2 seed in the tournament, while the Flying Dutchmen are the third seed. The two teams will play a nine-inning game beginning at 3 p.m. at Klenk Park. Following the contest, the tournament will shift to Adrian College, where Games 3-7 of the MIAA Tournament will be staged on Thursday-Friday, May 10-11.
Tickets for Wednesday's game cost $7.00 for general admission, while tickets for non-MIAA students and MIAA faculty and staff with ID cost $5.00. MIAA students with ID are admitted free of charge.
