SCOTS WIN! Stevens lifts men's basketball team to victory at Calvin

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Freshman Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) scored with 4.3 seconds to play in regulation to give the Alma College men's basketball team a 68-66 victory on Wednesday (Feb. 8) over Calvin College at Calvin's Van Noord Arena.

Stevens, who had 10 points in the game, lifted the Scots (11-11 overall, 7-4 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) to victory after being down by as many as 13 points in the second half. It is also the second time this season the freshman has provided late game heroics. On January 21, Stevens hit a shot with five seconds to play to give Alma with win at Albion College.

The win moves Alma into a tie with Calvin for second place in the league with three games to play. The top four teams qualify for the MIAA Tournament, which will be held at Hope College. The Dutch clinched the regular season-title with a win over Trine University, coupled with Calvin's loss to Alma.

Freshman Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ada) paced Alma with 16 points off the bench, scoring 14 points in the final 20 minutes, including all four of his three-point attempts. Senior Trevor Gernaat (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian/Mid-Michigan CC) netted 14 points and scored 11 in the final stanza, adding a trio of three-pointers as Alma shot 50 percent from behind the arc in the second half.

Senior Tyler Edwards (Flint, Mich./Swartz Creek) was also in double-figures, scoring 10 points, and led the team with eight rebounds.

Michael Welch led Calvin (12-10, 7-4 MIAA) with 16 points.

Alma will be on the road on Saturday, traveling to Angola, Ind., to face Trine University. Tip off is at 3 p.m.
