Albion, Mich. - The Alma College men's basketball team took down No. 24 Albion College 78-74 on Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon.
Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Holly) tied a season-high with 22 points off the bench on 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) had 14 points, three assists and two rebounds and made all six of his free throws. Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) posted 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Brandon Rake (Whitehall, Mich. / Whitehall) went for 10 points and nine boards.
"This was such a tough gritty win for our team," said Head Coach Ryan Clark. "Albion is as tough as they come and we showed up to battle tonight! I'm extremely proud of our defensive effort and that we showed some grit to make the plays needed to win at the end."
Alma (11-10, 5-5 MIAA) led for the final 5:13 after Rake broke a 68-68 tie. Two free throws from Stevens put the Scots up four, but Albion's Cortez Garland made a three to pull to within one. Woodruff responded on the next possession with a three of his own to quiet the crowd. The Britons wouldn't get any closer for the rest of the game.
There were 28 ties and 22 lead changes in the game. The biggest lead of the game was nine points, which both teams each had once.
The Scots held Albion (18-3, 9-1 MIAA) to 37.5 percent shooting, the Britons' worst shooting percentage since their season opener.
