Men’s Golf Begins Season at Bedford Valley Golf Course

Battle Creek, Mich.- The Alma College men's golf team traveled to Battle Creek, Mich. for the Lou Collins Invitational, hosted by Olivet College, to kick off its 2017 season. The Scots ended round one in 16th place with a total score of 339 strokes.

The men were led by junior Bennett Schmitt (Frankfort, Mich./Frankfort), who finished the day tied for 67th place with his score of 82 (+10). Trailing Schmitt was fellow junior Kyle Bodkins, who fell in a tie for 83rd place with a score of 85 (+13).

What Happened

  • Schmitt and Bodkins, today's leaders for the Scots, finished within 3 strokes of each other with their close scores. 
  • Two freshmen participated in today's round, with both Tait Morrissey (Canadian Lakes, Mich./Big Rapids) and Reese Middleton (Perry, Mich./Perry) tying for 88th with their scores of 86 (+14).

  • "There were some tough playing conditions today with wind and cool weather out on the course. The team felt some first-tournament nerves, but are looking for a better performance tomorrow." -Head coach Charlie Goffnett


  • The Scots' 16th place finish puts them behind Olivet College by 11 strokes going into Day 2. 
  • Two freshmen and two juniors participated in today's round of play.

 Alma will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 2), for round two of the Lou Collins Invite set to start at 9:00 am.
