2017 marks the third season for Michael Kinney as head coach of the Alma College men's lacrosse program.
Kinney took over the program in fall of 2015 and in his first two years, has led the Scots to a regular season record of 23-9 (.719) overall and 10-3 (.769) in the MIAA conference. Under Kinney's direction, the team reached the MIAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 2015 and returned in 2016, making it to the championship game, finishing 2nd.
Since arriving at Alma College, Kinney has guided the program to their highest national ranking since its inception in 2012 and continues to build Alma College Lacrosse on a regional and national level through an aggressive national recruiting campaign that has yielded players from California, Ohio, Florida, New York and Illinois. With a strong focus on academics, Kinney has instilled a competitive mindset in the classroom and the Alma College Lacrosse team currently holds the highest team GPA in program history.
Prior to Alma College, Kinney served as the offensive coordinator and director of national recruiting for Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference. Because of his career experience, he worked on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, continuing to prepare him for a head coaching position. In the program's first year, the Crusaders went 8-6.
Before his time at Capital, Kinney was the assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the start-up season at Hiram College outside of Cleveland, Ohio, his first stop as a NCAA coach. Prior to that, Kinney had years of experience as a head coach and offensive coordinator at the high school level, having coached in Columbus, Ohio, and outside of Boston, Mass.
Over his 20-plus year career, Kinney has mentored middle school, high school and elite club teams on a national stage, including a 2012 tournament championship at Summer Slam, a high-level national recruiting tournament in Philadelphia, Pa.
In 2010, Coach Kinney was given the honor of being named a US Lacrosse Man of the Year by his coaching peers for his work in bringing lacrosse to inner city student athletes in the Columbus, Ohio, area. Kinney has coached 16 high school All-Americans and over 250 college lacrosse players . In addition, he has coached four former players who were drafted to Major League Lacrosse rosters.
Kinney is a co-founder of Momentum Lacrosse which is based in Columbus, Ohio and currently serves as the program director for Momentum Lacrosse Michigan as well as being the U-19 head coach for Momentum989 in Midland, Mich. Kinney attended Northwood University in Midland, Mich., and was a starting attackman for the Timberwolves from 1990-1993. He also earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the school.
Kinney and his wife currently reside in Midland with their three children and is an avid fisherman and outdoor enthusiast. Coach Kinney is currently pursuing an MBA at the DeVos Graduate School of Northwood University.
