Albion, Mich. - The Alma College men's soccer team earned a 4-2 victory over host Albion College on Saturday (Oct. 12). The Scots scored four goals, their most in a game this season. With the win the Scots move to 2-0 in conference play and 5-6 overall. Senior Garrison Mast (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) made six saves in the contest.
The game was even until senior Tanner Parrett (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) scored of an assist from sophomore Danten McFate (Haslett, Mich.Haslett) in the 25th minute. Play continued for 10 minutes before Albion's Daniel Akhimien found the net to even the game at one in the 35th minute. The Scots struck back almost immediately when sophomore Connor McCain (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) found senior Josh Stauffer (Midland, Mich./Dow High School) in the 38th minute to make it 2-1. In the 52nd minute, the Scots scored again when senior Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) found freshman Benjamin Polehna (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek). The goal was the first of Polehna's college career. Albion cut the lead in half when Stefan Isaevski scored to make it 3-2 in the 62nd minute. The Scots would control the rest of the game and would score another goal to make it 4-2. Canlas earned his second assist of the day when he found fellow senior Brian Ganton (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) with eight seconds remaining in the game.
The Scots outshot the Britons 11-10. There were five corner kicks in the game, the Scots had two. Both corner kicks came in the second half. The Scots also played disciplined, only committing four fouls compared to Albion's 12. Zabith Wilson and Chase Foresman both picked up yellow cards for the Britons.
The Scots will remain on the road when they travel to nationally ranked Calvin University for a game on Wednesday (Oct. 16). The match will begin at 7:00 pm.
