ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College STUNT team kicked off its season with a pair of home games on Sunday at Art Smith Arena. The Scots fell in the first game, 15-14, in overtime against the Davenport University Panthers. Alma then responded by earning its first win of the year with 19-0 victory over the Olivet College Comets.
In the opening game against the Panthers, Alma got off to a 3-2 lead after the first quarter that featured partner stunts. The Scots outscored Davenport once again 3-2 in the second quarter that featured pyramids and tosses to hold an overall 6-4 advantage heading into halftime.
Davenport was able to cut into the Alma lead and tie things up after the third quarter that featured group jumps and tumbling. The score was all squared at seven a piece heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter started off with Davenport taking the lead by winning two points to Alma's one in the first round of the frame that featured combination team performances. In the next round, Alma won a point while Davenport earned none to make it 9-9 heading into the final round. In the final round, each team was awarded three points so the Scots and Panthers would have to settle it in overtime with the score knotted up at 12 each.
In overtime, the Panthers outscored the Scots, 3-2, to take the win in hard fought game that lasted over an hour and a half.
Alma came back strong in their next matchup against Olivet. The Scots took a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and then were up 7-0 at halftime, earning all four points in the pyramid and tosses portion.
The Scots took three points in the third quarter to lead by 10 heading into the final quarter. Alma continued to shine as they earned the maximum three points in each round to win by final score of 19-0.
Alma will have another opportunity to take down Davenport University as it heads to Davenport for a game on Sunday, February 28.
