Alma, Mich. - In the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's preseason poll, the Alma College women's basketball team is slated to finish seventh in the conference, ahead of Kalamazoo and Saint Mary's.
The Scots finished the 2015-16 season with an overall record of 9-16 and a conference record of 4-12. The team graduated a total of five seniors but return ten players from last season's squad including newly appointed captains, seniors Tara Padgett (Freeland, Mich./Freeland) and Kaitlyn Kendall (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) and sophomore Sophie Guzman (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge).
Padgett led the team in 3-point shooting percentage at 41-percent and steals per game with two and finished second in points per game with 9.4 and assists per game with 2.2. Kendall started 17 games last season and had the best assist-to-turnover ratio on the team with 1.1 and the second-best shooting percentage at 46.1. Guzman led the team in minutes and is the second-leading scorer among returning players.
The program welcomes eight freshmen this season: Madison Hill (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek), Laura Smith (Pittsford, Mich./Pittsford), Madison Shegos (Fenton, Mich./Fenton), Jessie Jordan (Mason, Mich./Williamston), Hannah Thelen (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia), Mia Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern), Emily Weiss (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Ashtyn Maniez (Okemos, Mich./Okemos). The Scots also bring in sophomores Kendal Carlson (Kent City, Michigan/Kent City) and transfer Allison Karpinski (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak/Western Michigan University).
Kris Johnson is in her third season coaching the women's basketball program. In two full seasons, she has compiled an overall record of 16-34. After taking over a winless team in 2013, she has increased the team's win total to seven in her first season and nine last year.
