Alma Upended By No. 10 Trine

Angola, Ind. – The Alma College women's basketball team was defeated, 77-41, by the No. 10 Trine University (IN) Thunder Saturday (Jan. 19). Sophomore forward Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio / Arch Bishop Alter) scored a season-high 12 points off the bench for the Scots. Alma's record is now 8-10 overall and 3-6 in the MIAA while the Thunder are 9-0 in conference and 16-2 on the year.

What Happened

  • Alma was the first team on the board with a three-pointer made by freshman guard Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette). The Thunder would strike back with a 6-0 run to take control early. Long started her solid day with a traditional three-point play where she made the layup and hit the and one. The Scots found themselves down by nine at the end of the first.
  • The Scots struggled to score in the second only hitting three shots from the floor and three free throws. Sophomore forward Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) grabbed three of her five rebounds on the day in the second.
  • To start the second half, Alma tried to cut into the Thunder lead that was already at double digits. The Scots got within 13 when Hengesbach hit a jumper that was set up by junior guard Madison Hill (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek). Hengesbach also drew the foul and made it from the charity stripe. But Trine quickly gained back momentum and never looked back from there.

  • Along with being the team leader in points, Long also grabbed a game-high six rebounds.
  • The Scots had eight steals, the sixth highest in a game this season.
  • Trine scored the same amount points today as they did when the Scots and Thunder met earlier this season in Alma.
