Alma, Mich. – The Alma College women's basketball team blew out Kalamazoo 71-41 on Saturday (Jan. 4) afternoon.
The Scots (7-6, 2-2 MIAA) led for nearly the entire game. They shot 56 percent from the field in the first quarter before holding Kalamazoo to one field goal in 13 attempts in the second quarter. Alma led 41-19 at the break. Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich. / Escanaba) had 18 points and 14 rebounds in the first half alone.
Brandt would finish with 24 points and 15 rebounds in 22 minutes. She shot 9-of-14 from the field and made all six of her free throws. Oretha Humphries (Detroit, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public) scored 11 points and added six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Emily Long (Dayton, Ohio / Arch Bishop Alter) had eight points and nine rebounds while Hannah Syme (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern) also pulled down nine boards in just 13 minutes of action.
After a sluggish third quarter, Alma's defense remained stout in the fourth, holding the Hornets (2-10, 0-3 MIAA) to 13 percent shooting.
Alma missed just one free throw in the game; it finished 13-of-14 from the line. The Scots also significantly outrebounded Kalamazoo, 58-31. Alma finished with 42 points in the paint.
The Scots travel to Calvin University on Wednesday (Jan. 8). The Knights are currently 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
