Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-8 decision to Hope College on Wednesday night (April 25) as the Scots continued their season-ending three-game homestand.
Sophomore Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) and senior Brianna Soriano (San Diego, Calif./Serra) scored three goals each for Alma (4-8 overall, 1-6 MIAA) while senior Shelby Frazer (Holt, Mich./Holt) and freshman Sam DeBoer (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) also scored.
Sophomore Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) stopped 17 shots in net while Soriano led Alma defensively with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Hope (7-6, 4-3) remained alive in the MIAA Tournament race and was led by Carly Pieri's four markers.
How It Happened
- Hope opened the game with a 2-0 lead just over 2:30 into the game before Sam DeBoer found the net to make the score 2-1 with 25:26 to play in the half.
- The Dutch answered with six straight markers to take an 8-1 advantage before Shelby Frazer scored to cut the deficit to six goals. Hope scored two minutes later to take a 9-2 lead, then Benoit found the next on a free position shot to make the score 9-3 with 9:05 to play.
- Hope scored three times to take a 12-3 lead, but Brianna Soriano gave Alma a lift late in the opening frame, scoring with 0.06 seconds left in the half.
- The Dutch scored the first three goals of the half to pull away, while Benoit and Soriano each scored twice in the final 16:54.
The Scots will close out the 2018 campaign on Saturday, April 28, hosting Olivet College for a 1 p.m. matchup. The program will honor five seniors - Brianna Soriano, Shelby Frazer, Madi Webster, Stephanie Mangutz, and Kira Reading - prior to the contest.
