Alma, Mich. - The Alma College women's lacrosse team defeated Bethel University (IN) 17-11 in its home opener on Wednesday (Feb. 19) afternoon.
Alma's assist total of 14 is a new program record, besting the previous record of 10 set in the 2012 season. Alma's point total of 31 is also the third-most in the program's history.
The Scots scored two goals in the last two minutes of the first half to take an 8-7 lead going into the break. MacKenzie Chevalier (Fraser, Mich. / International Academy of Macomb) added to Alma's lead one minute into the second half. After Bethel responded with a goal of its own, Alma reeled off eight straight goals to put the game out of reach.
Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) scored five goals and had eight total points. She led all players in both categories and also added six draw controls. Kalyn Thompson (Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton) posted five points on one goal and four assists. Haley Willman (Hemlock, Mich. / Breckenridge) scored three times. Ava Frederickson (Alto, Mich. / Lowell) had two goals, two assists and a game-high eight ground balls. Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) made 12 saves in goal.
Alma remains at home for its next game when it welcomes Earlham College (IN) to Bahlke Field on Saturday (Feb. 19). Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
