Olivet, Mich. - The Alma College women's soccer team loss 3-1 to Olivet on a rainy Wednesday (Oct. 10). Freshman forward Meghan Pfile (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) scored the lone goal for the Scots. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) made five saves.
Emma Essen led the way for the Comets scoring two times on the day. While Samantha Gifford made four saves for Olivet.
Alma is now 2-10-1 and 0-4-1 in the MIAA. Olivet currently stands at 7-4-2 and 3-2-0 in conference.
It was a quick start for both teams. Samantha Torres opened up the scoring just over five minutes into the match. The Scots had a quick response though. Pfile, who scored her first career goal last game, scored just 19 seconds after the Torres goal to tie it up at one.
Essen found the back of the net for her first goal of the game in 12thminute of the match. Essen then scored again in the second half. Currently she stands at 10 goals on the season, good for second in the conference.
The Scots were unable score the rest of the way. A constant rainstorm was going on all game and referees had to stop it early with just under six minutes remaining because the field was unplayable.
Of Alma's six shots, five of them were on goal. Senior midfielder Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich. / Traverse City West) led the way with three shots on net.
The Scots play disciplined throughout the entire game with only four fouls to Olivet's 14.
Senior midfielder Melissa Gal (Bartlett, Ill. / Bartlett) was given a yellow card in the second half.
The Scots prepare for another road contest this time at Calvin College on Tuesday, October 16 with a primetime start at 7:00 p.m. They'll be home again on Saturday, October 20 when Kalmazoo College comes to town for a noon kickoff.
