Alma, Mich. - The Alma College volleyball team defeated Kalamazoo College 3-1 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday (Sept. 10) evening. The Scots improve to 6-2 while the Hornets fall to 7-2.
Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) led all players with 19 kills while hitting .302 and adding five aces. She also had a team-high 14 digs. Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) posted 14 kills and hit .353 as well as three block assists. Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) tallied 44 assists while also notching five kills while Megan Greenup (St. Louis, Mich. / St. Louis High School) set. Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) tied her career-high with eight kills and tied for the team lead with Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin High School) in block assists with four.
Alma won the first set handily 25-10. The Hornets came roaring back with a 29-27 victory in the second set, the highest-scoring one of the night. There were 17 ties and eight lead changes in the second set, the most in any set of the match.
The Scots regained the momentum with a hard-fought 28-26 win in the third set and wrapped it up with a 25-21 win in the fourth.
Alma had nine aces in the game; Kalamazoo had none. In addition, the Scots hit .288 while the Hornets hit .191.
The Scots take to the road for their next set of games. They'll play Whitman College (WA) and Aurora University (IL) in the first two games of four at the DePauw University Tiger Invitational on Friday (Sept. 13) at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.
