Chicago - The Alma College volleyball team split a pair of games on Saturday (Oct. 19), falling to Governors State University 3-2 and defeating North Park University 3-1. Alma is now 15-9; GSU is 8-19 and North Park is 11-14.
The Scots took the second match against North Park in a thrilling finish. Alma led 24-21 before allowing the Vikings to score the next four points to go up 25-24. After taking a timeout, the Scots forced a North Park error, got a kill from Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) and a block from Majerle and Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) to earn the win.
Majerle led the team with 35 kills on the day – 19 against GSU and 16 against North Park. Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) had 67 assists, surpassing 2,000 assists in her career. Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) totaled 20 kills in both matches.
The first two sets against GSU were quite polarizing. The Jaguars took the first set 25-11 behind 16 kills and no errors while Alma claimed the second 25-10 with 11 kills, two errors, and four aces. Alma also won the third set 25-22; it took control with a 5-0 run to break away from a 16-16 tie. GSU gave it right back with a 25-19 win in the fourth thanks to a 7-0 run. In the fifth set, Alma had a 14-12 lead needing one more point to secure the win but the Jaguars came away with the last four points.
Alma returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 22) when it travels to Olivet for a match against the Comets. It will begin at 6:30 p.m.
