Midland, Mich. - The Alma College women's volleyball team took down Northwood University in five sets on Tuesday (Oct. 29) evening in its penultimate game of the regular season.
The Scots are now 17-11 overall and have ended their non-conference season with a 12-9 record. They are currently the third seed in the MIAA and can vault to as high as the second seed or fall to as low as the fourth seed. Northwood is now 4-18.
Alma hit .308 against the Division II Timberwolves, led by Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford) with 21 kills and Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) with 20; Miller had only one error on 37 attacks. Haley Ullrich (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) posted kills 11 and Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) had nine to go along with two blocks. Haley Novak (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) set a new career-high with 58 assists.
The Scots won the first set 25-22 after scoring the last three points. Novak assisted both Ullrich and Miller before taking the last kill for herself.
Alma hit a combined .184 in the next two sets, dropping them both 25-17. It bounced back in the fourth set with match highs of 20 kills and a .432 hit percentage. The Scots held a 23-21 lead before Northwood tied the set at 23, but Miller came through with the last two kills to send the match to a fifth set. At the end of the fifth, it was Majerle and Miller again that scored three straight points to get Alma to match point where Rachael Parrett (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin High School) and Sicken won the match on a block.
Mackenzie Kepler led the Timberwolves with 15 kills; Carson Rutherford pitched in with 14. Northwood hit .339 as a team.
Alma ends the regular season with a home match against No. 4 Calvin University on Friday (Nov. 1). First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
