ALBION, Mich. – The Alma College volleyball team fell in a nail-biting five-set contest to Albion College (21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-12) on Wednesday. The Scots drop to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Megan Greenup had a career-high 26 assists for Alma while Haley Novak earned 19 assists, eight digs, and seven kills. Sara Majerle posted a team-high 17 kills with 13 digs. Bailey Cantrell also tallied 13 digs.
The first set was a close one with neither team building a big lead. The Scots took a 22-18 advantage and the Britons responded with three-straight points to make it a one-score game. Alma took a time out and went on 3-0 run with a kill by Novak, a service ace by Kolbey Boyd, and a kill by Majerle to claim the opening set.
After Albion took the second set, Alma never trailed in the third set. With the score tied at 21, Cantrell nailed down a service ace to put Alma in front for good as they won by two points.
The Britons went on a long run midway through the fourth and won it with ease to send the match to a deciding fifth set. Albion built a 12-5 lead but the Scots would not go away quietly as they went on a 7-2 run that included three kills from Majerle and one from McKenzie Smith to cut the deficit to two. The Britons were able to win the next point though to earn the match win.
Alma now prepares to host Trine University on Friday, April 9th at 6:30 p.m.
