Arnold gets second career win with course record

Kinchloe, Mich. - Senior Kaitlyn Arnold (Jackson, Mich./Northwest HS) has two victories in her first two races of 2016 as she set a course record on Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon, winning the Chris Yanni Memorial Invitational women's 5K with a time of 17:29.91.

The Scots placed third among the four teams at the event, which included St. Norbert (Wis.) College and nationally-ranked Northern Michigan University, a NCAA Division II school.

"Our women's team has a tough meet today," Head Coach Matt Chovanec said. "St. Norbert and Northern Michigan are very good. I am very pleased at where we are at this point of the season. We are young and coming along nicely. The confidence we gain each meet will be a big plus for us by the end of the season."

Arnold dominated the field for her second career win, finishing more than 18 seconds over St. Norbert's Erin Artz, who was a national qualifier for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships a year ago. The Green Knights took four of the top six spots to win the meet.

"I'm super excited for my second win," Arnold said. "It was a great test and I stuck to my plan as close as possible. However, I'm even more excited for the rest of the season ahead. Our team is young and gaining more knowledge with each race."

Sophomore Mallory Munderloh (St. Louis, Mich./St. Louis HS) was the next Alma finisher behind Arnold, placing eighth overall with a time of 19.21.9, while junior Chelse Van Spronsen clocked in at 20:23.1 to place 22nd overall. Junior Hannah Garn (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte HS) ran a 20:27.8 to finish 25th, and freshman Madeline McDonnell (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) was 34th, finishing the course in 21:30.3.

The Scots have a week off before hosting their first home event in several years, staging the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Pine River Country Club in Alma. The race is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.
