Grand Rapids, Mich. – Alma College cross country team competed in the Calvin Knight Invitational Saturday (Sept. 9) morning in an event hosted by Calvin College. The meet featured programs from across all three NCAA divisions as well as NAIA participants. The women's team placed eighth of 23 teams in the 5k while the men's team finished 12th out of 22 squads in the 8k.
- Just like the Jeff Drenth Invitational on Sept. 1, the first three finishers for the women's team were Garn, senior Chelse Van Spronsen (Jenison, Mich./Jenison), and junior Mallory Munderloh.
- The top four placers for the men - Berlanga, junior Justin Jones (Cedar Springs, Mich./Cedar Springs), sophomore Jack Montgomery (Mikado, Mich./Oscoda Area), and freshman Karl Stroup (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) - all finished within a minute of each other.

"We had seven women finish under 21:30 [for five kilometers] and nine men under 30:00 [for eight kilometers]. I am looking forward to watching both teams continue to grow and challenge each other to reach our goals for the season." - Head Coach Matt Chovanec
- For the second consecutive meet in 2017, the first three finishers for the women finished within 40 seconds of each other.
- Both the men's and women's teams featured a freshman in their top five: Stroup and Callie Jones (Mason, Mich./Mason).
The Scots have a week off before traveling to Hope College on Saturday, Sept. 23, to compete in the MIAA Jamboree. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
